Proposal - Open-source intelectual property, not just software
Using the solidarity of the great name of SourceForge, the hosting provider of over 100,000 open source software developments, I have made purchases of both ipforge.org/net and patentforge.org/net
I intend to create communities similar to those existing in the Open Source software world but for utility and design, form and function.
The reasons for doing this are many, but can be summed up in a short statement concerning the use of patents. The patent is meant to provide incentive to the inventor to produce new and ingenuitive ideas, but what it has done within the last century is to provide incentive for large corporations to own as much intellectual property as possible. Instead of providing incentive to create, patent law has only created incentive to build walls and fences around new concepts and this prevents the use of new technologies.
I have confidence that the markets are ready for a dynamic shift into a new paradigm of intellectual property and the growth and development of new ideas. Individuals today are stifled by the high cost of 'protecting' their intellectual property. When patenting something and funding the 10 to 20 thousand dollar cost of simply obtaining a utility patent on a strong new idea (not to mentioned the high cost of making a patent worthwhile through litigation), it will simply be bought by a large corporation that has an interest in the market. Any future development in that area is then fenced-in by that company by their writing more general claims into their own patents.
For these reasons I have purchased two new domains and intend to foster a community of thinkers and inventors, from the birth of idea and formation of new concepts (da Vinci Concept) through the creation of intellectual property, design, method, and process (ipforge.net) and finally protecting open sourced intellectual property from being destroyed by the formulation of patents that prevent open development (patentforge.net).
I will be working on the technology back-end for the websites in the coming weeks and preparing for a first release of the sites.
Please participate in the discussion thread on this subject in the forums: Propose:Business, Economy, Policy:Open Source Project: IPForge.net and PatentForge.net
I intend to use the software backend for 'SourceForge.net' or something similar, providing access to resources for community and project development, even internet hosting. The site will utilize an application process similar to that which SourceForge uses for new accounts. It may take between 12 and 18 months for the new sites to take off as the first few projects trickle in and things pick up pace. I expect to require a more robust hosting solution much farther beyond my current solution before a full-fledged intellectual property hosting organization can be fielded.
Any help or thoughts are appreciated.

da Vinci Concept is now online
The da Vinci Concept has finally been separated from the Poetic Publishing website. All of the conceptual discussions have been moved to this site. Here you will find ongoing discussions in numerous topics ranging from technological innovation, space exploration, scientific method, public policy, and government, all focused on practical extrapolation of today's culture and technology.
da Vinci Concept's goal is to identify desireable techhnologies and the means of achieving them, discussing not the fatalistic/deterministic 'what will be', but the achievable 'what should be.'
New discussions, proposals, and requests of significant value to the goals of da Vinci Concept will be posted here as news items. You may 'syndicate' our news by referring to our RSS feed. http://davinciconcept.com/e107_files/backend/news.txt
The da Vinci Concept community values communication and therefore our members take pride in producing quality discussion threads that are both valuable to contribute to and valuable to read. For this reason the forums are highly moderated and well maintained.
Enjoy! I look forward to your contributions!
